CNN just made a breaking news announcement, Michael Crichton has died suddenly after a private battle with cancer, according to a statement issued by his family. Crichton was the author of many best selling novels such as Jurassic Park, Timeline, The Great Train Robbery, and Sate of Fear. He was the executive producer of ER and was a Emmy and Peabody winner.

Personally he has been my favorite author since I read Jurassic Park for the first time in elementary school. I have read and re-read his works more than anything else that has ever found a place on my book shelf. At the end of every new novel, he left me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next. It seems now a sad reality that whatever was next, will never come. He wrote with an imagination and an intelligence that made everything we penned seem like reality, qualities that are not common among many authors these days. He was, and will continue to be a huge inspiration on me as a writer.

My thoughts go out to his family Friends and fans. He is missed.

Edit: IGN.com reports that his final work will be published December of this year.

I never had more fun reading than when I read Jurassic Park and the sequel. Jurassic Park was actually the first “real book” I ever read for myself. I thank him for writing something that called me.

Yes, it is, indeed, sad news. Crichton’s ability to bring to merge fiction and fact into fast-paced novels that so often found themselves in film spoke to his genius as a writer. Eaters of the Dead was one of my favorites that, like Jurassic Park, made it to the big screen as 13th Warrior. He will be missed.

Chrichton was a superior artistic force who achieved ubiquity in our culture, when the field of authors and filmakers was littered with masters. He was proIific and consistently good. I remember watching Andromeda Strain as an eleven year-old and falling in love with science fiction. I’ve read every book and watched every film or television series made based on his work. It was through his novels that I practiced pace, plot, and character, and decided thrillers were my playground.

The skies, the netherworld, and the dark underbelly of our imaginations will miss him. Thanks for sparing time and sentiment to acknowledge the life and passing of such a great force in the story telling world.

He did write with an imagination and an intelligence that made everything we penned seem like reality. Even though I am not all that familiar with his works, reading this has left me speachless. I have heard of and read his works many times. He is an inspiration and can’t wait to see what sort of writers he inspires

This is damned shame. He had a great imagination and great scientific mind yet he wrote with real humanity.

    He will be missed.

    This is very sad.

Michael Chrichton wrote physics text books before he began writing fiction; did you know that? As a Biology/English teacher, I’ve always loved the way his science fiction precisely that, strongly based in real science, with just enough imagination to spring into that which had yet to be discovered. Perhaps if he could write for us now, he’d be springing into yet another new adventure!

    Wow. What a surprise.

He had wonderful gift. Once I picked up a book of his, I was guaranteed to finish it within a couple of days. He could reach out of the page and grab a reader in a strangle hold.

I remember being so disappointed in the theatre when I saw Jurassic Park because it didn’t live up to the expectations of my imagination. Thanks, Michael for helping me realize the power that can be harnessed in words on a page.

    Sad news…
